Today is the launch of Marie Claire Runway, a new biannual magazine that ‘celebrates all the fun and fabulosity of the Fashion Week whirl’. It’s brought to you by the people behind women’s glossy Marie Claire, and I was fortunate enough to be creative director of this project for seven frantic weeks at the end of last year. I worked long hours with a crack team of journalists to put together the mag and tried to document the process as we went. This video is a little taster of what happened behind the scenes.
Launching a new mag involves a lot of thinking, experimentation and red wine. We tried hundreds of different ideas for the cover and some of the inside pages were so intricate we sent the repro house into meltdown, with over 1000 images of models that needed to be digitally cut out and removed from their backgrounds.
I think this might my favourite spread…

Such captivating design. I even made my mom in Missouri look at some of my favorite pages over a Skype conversation. I cannot get over some of these spreads. Amazing work!
Thank you Sarah. That’s really nice to hear and much appreciated. Getting excited about number 2 already!
Hi! I’m a reader and a big fan of MC UK – I was wondering what font did the team use for ‘RUNWAY’ (on the cover) It’s a really gorgeous font. Thank you so much!
Hi Chloe, thanks for the comment, glad you love Runway. I’m just starting to think about the next issue, we have some exciting plans, maybe I’ll put a few sneak peaks up on here! The font on the cover is called Strangelove and it’s based on the titles for the 1964 film Dr Strangelove (or how I learnt to love the atomic bomb)
Thank you so much
I can’t wait for the next issue of MC runway! Fantastic art direction and layout. I had a hard time not tearing any of the pages, so I bought two copies. Great job and I look forward!
PS: Please do post some sneak peaks if you can!
